Is Your PPS Number On Birth Certificate?

Getting a birth, marriage or death certificate in Ireland

No - a PPS number is not generated until 14 days after a birth is registered, so its not possible for the PPS number to feature on a birth certificate, even if you apply for a replacement, this is a carbon copy of the original and will still not feature the PPS number.

In order to get a copy of your PPS Number you will need identification, which in 90% of cases will be a birth certificate and photo ID such as a passport.

PPS numbers only came into effect after 1971 so there is a criteria to those who have been issued with one, the stipulations of those who have a PPS number are:

  • You were born in Ireland in or after 1971
  • You started work in Ireland after 1979
  • You are getting a social welfare payment
  • You are taking part in the Drugs Payment Scheme

If you do not know your PPS number the first step is to get your identification together, if you do not have your birth certificate and need a replacement, you can do this online today with next day delivery, just click here.

Once a birth is registered in Ireland, the registree is issued a PPS number, PPS stands for personal public service number.

Unfortunately, the PPS number does not feature on a birth certificate, but in order to get a copy of your PPS Number you will need identification, which in 90% of cases will be a birth certificate and photo ID such as a passport.
